These were some of the nightmarish revelations Report endorsed by the United Nations released on Thursday, which found that Russia had committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity in the course of its activities year-long invasion of Ukraine.
The three international experts appointed as investigators of the Human Rights Council’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Ukraine have concluded that Russia is guilty of gross violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws.
These included indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas and targeted attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as well as torture, illegal imprisonment, summary executions and rape.
“The Commission is concerned about the number, geographic spread and seriousness of human rights violations and related international crimes that it has documented during its mandate,” the investigators wrote in their report. “These affected men, women, boys and girls of all backgrounds and ages.”
The report is likely to have little practical impact on Russia, but it will increase pressure to hold the country accountable. by the International Criminal Court.
The report, at the very least, also serves as a historical record of abuses by Russia, which has not cooperated with the investigation.
