Top 12 weekend trips from Christchurch to book in 2023

As the major hub of the South Island, and the largest city, it’s no surprise that there are tons of options for weekend trips from Christchurch. Whether you prefer hiking, stargazing or hot pools, there’s a weekend getaway from Christchurch to suit your tastes.

For visitors or locals looking for an overnight escape, this guide has all you need to know to sort out your transport, accommodation and activities for your weekend away from Christchurch.

Most of these trips work well year-round, although Akaroa, Lyttleton and Timaru are especially good in the summer when you can enjoy the beach while Mt Hutt is best in ski season and Lake Tekapo when it is surrounded by lupins (November and December).

While I travelled to and around Christchurch many times while living in New Zealand. Many of those times I flew in, so I’ve made sure to include a few options for Christchurch weekend trips without a car.

Best Weekend Trips from Christchurch

1. Akaroa

Akaroa is famous for being the only French town in New Zealand, established by French whalers back in the 1800s, which makes it a very unique place to visit from Christchurch. It’s also situated at the end of the beautiful Banks Peninsula which makes a great (if windy) drive.

What to do

How to get there

  • Drive: 80km or 1 hour 25 minutes (the road is pretty windy so don’t eat right beforehand!)
  • Public Transport: There is a direct bus run by French Connection

Timaru is one of the smaller cities in the South Island (just barely big enough to have an airport) and is often missed by tourists but it’s a great place to visit, especially in summer when you can make the most of the coastal location. Plus there are lots of free activities in Timaru so it’s good for those looking for cheap places to visit near Christchurch.

Methven is a picturesque ski-resort town that makes an ideal winter getaway from Christchurch.

What to Do

  • Relax at the newly built Opuke Spa with mountain views and both a luxe adults-only area as well as a bomb zone and cave in the family pools.
  • Go for a walk in the beautiful Mid-Canterbury highlands surrounded by snowy mountains.

How to get there

  • Drive: 100km or 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Public Transport: None available, although you can book a seat on the Methven Travel shuttle from Christchurch Airport for around $45pp

Lake Heron - Ashburton Lakes New Zealand

9. Ashburton

Ashburton sits at the crosspoint of two of the South Island’s major rivers, the Rangitata and the Rakaia. Originally a farming town, it’s now known for the scenery of the Ashburton Lakes area and the many sports events hosted there from racing to rugby.

What to do

  • Check out the free museums (there are six in town from trains to cars to planes to local history)
  • Try some water sports at Lake Hood like jet skiing or kayaking
  • Enjoy some walks in the town gardens or surrounding hiking trials, the Ashburton Lakes district is especially stunning in winter covered in snow

How to get there

  • Drive: 90km or 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Public Transport: You can get off at Ashburton on either the Christchurch-Invercargill or Christchurch-Queenstown routes

Where to stay

Accommodation in Ashburton is really just a handful of motels. While most are nice places to stay, especially Quality Suites which I’d recommend, there isn’t really anything at the luxury or backpacking end. The Suites is a spacious property with views of the golf course, not far from the town centre. Click here to check prices and book.

10. Mt Hutt

Mt Hutt has several times been voted the best ski field in New Zealand and has one of the longest ski seasons, opening around mid-June to late October/early November each year, meaning there is a big window of opportunity to visit from Christchurch and hit the slopes.

What to Do

  • Get your skis (or snowboard) on to test out the 365 hectares of slopes from beginner to expert to enjoy with 3 chair lifts and 2 surface lifts.
  • If you prefer something slightly less active then you could try the highest spa pool in the country.

  • Race the family (or your mates) on toboggans

  • Drive: 115km or 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Public Transport: None but there are private shuttles to and from Methven (book through Methven Travel) or Christchurch (book through Snowman Shuttles)
