Xtra Time Web Desk. Good news for thousands of Green & Maroon fans as new ISL champions ATK Mohun Bagan will now be renamed Mohun Bagan Super Giants, according to team owner Sanjiv Goenka. The name ATK will no longer exist as it has been demanded by Mohun Bagan fans for a long time. Franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka made the announcement after the ISL final in Margao on Sunday.
“It is a small but significant statement. From next month, ATK Mohun Bagan will be renamed Mohun Bagan Super Giants. We were waiting for the (ISL final) win to announce it. This win is an opportunity to get the word out,” Goenka said shortly after ATK Mohun Bagan were crowned ISL 2022-23 champions.
The Mariners won their maiden ISL title by beating Bengaluru FC 4-3 on penalties. In a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, Golden Glove winner Vishal Keith made his second straight appearance for his side, while nobody missed a spot in a game dictated by penalties throughout.
The score was 2-2 after extra time, with Dimitri Petratos converting both penalties for ATK MB, while Sunil Chhetri and Roy Krishna stood out for the Blues.
