Hear about a trip to Fiji (Viti Levu and Tavuni Islands) as Amateur Traveler talks to Justin Barnes about his recent trip to the island nation, including some pretty amazing scuba diving experiences.
When asked why someone should go to Fiji, Justin says: “Lots of sun, lots of green forests, lots of blue ocean and lots of kind people. Some of the nicest people we’ve met on our travels.”
When a trip to Tonga was canceled due to the volcanic eruption and the COVID wave, Justin and his wife Crystal used their tickets on Fiji Airways to visit the two islands in Fiji instead.
They started with the largest island in Fiji, which is Viti Levu. Viti Levu is about the same size as Hawaii. They flew to Nadi and did an introductory tour, which is also recommended for people traveling there. They visited Sri Siva Subramania Hindu Temple, Sleeping Giant Garden, Market and Mud Pools. Since they arrived on Sunday, they also visited one of the local churches.
They then boarded a bus to Pacific Harbor, known for its adventure tours such as waterfall hikes, zip lines, and ATV tours. They did a cage-free shark dive experience where they peered at a group of over 100 sharks at the edge of an underwater ridge.
In Viti Levu, they were also in the capital city of Suva. Here they visited Thurston Gardens, the Fiji Museum and the Kolo-i-Suva Forest Reserve for another waterfall hike.
On smaller Tavyun Island, they’ll dove to see the soft corals of Rainbow Reef, the vertical corals and sea caves of The Wall, and the cabbage-leaf corals.
On land, they walked the Lavena Coastal Walk and hiked to some of the waterfalls in Buma National Heritage Park. They visited the Pearl Farm just off the coast and explored the views from Des Voeux Peak.
Whether you come for the adventure tours, beaches, waterfalls or sunsets, Fijians will welcome you with a hearty ‘Bula’.
